1523 - The Reformation began in Strasbourg, France

1956 - The first Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod service in Butuan City, the Philippines took place.

1483 - Nikolaus von Amsdorf was born. A friend and co-worker of Martin Luther, Amsdorf fought for a faithful following of Luther's doctrines after Luther's death.
December 4
1842 - Trinity Church, St. Louis was dedicated.
December 7
1539 - Believing bigamy to be preferable to divorce, Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon gave Philip of Hesse permission to marry a second wife. The bigamous relationship eventually caused a scandal.
December 8
1849 - The Wisconsin Synod was organized as "Die erste deutch evang.-luth. Synode von Wisconsin".
1947 - McCollum v. Board of Education was argued before the Supreme Court. At question was the possible violation of the First Amendment by religious education in public schools.
December 9
1839 - The log cabin college in Dresden, Perry County, Missouri, founded by Buenger, Brohm, Fuerbringer, and Walther, opened.
December 10
1520 - Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon burned the papal bull threatening excommunication for Luther and several books advocating the authority of the Pope on a bonfire. Luther was excommunicated less than a month later.

1570 - John Brenz died. Brenz was Luther's most reliable friend in southern Germany.
1901 - Oliver Harms was born. Harms served as the seventh president of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.
December 12
1841 - The Saxons dedicated their first school building in Altenberg, Missouri.
December 13
1545 - The first session of the Council of Trent opened. The papacy called the council to deal with the Reformation and renewal in the Church.
December 14
1924 - The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod founded its St. Louis radio station, KFUO.
December 15
1864 - Congress amended the Constitution with ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment protects the freedom of religious expression and outlaws any form of State religion.
December 16
1854 - After immigrating to America, the Wendish (Slavic) Lutherans settled in Galveston, Texas
December 20
1552 - Katharina (von Bora) Luther died. Katharina was Martin Luther's wife.
December 21
1521 - The Zwickau "Prophets" -- Muentzer, Storch, and Stuebner -- arrived at Wittenberg.
December 22
1548 - The Leipzig Interim was adopted. The interim, written by Maurice of Saxony, compromised several of the Lutheran beliefs and positions, including those dealing with the doctrine of justification.
December 24
1851 - Heinrich Schwan, serving as a pastor in Cleveland, Ohio, set up a Christmas tree inside the church. Schwan helped to popularize this practice in America.

1521 - Andreas Karlstadt, pastor of the Wittenberg City Parish Church, gave Communion in German and allowed the laity to take the bread and wine in their hands.
December 28
1384 - John Wycliffe died. Wycliffe was a professor at Oxford, where he expressed many of the criticisms of church teaching and practice that would later be found at the heart of Martin Luther's protests leading to the Reformation.
December 31
1838 - The first group of Saxon immigrants, onboard the ship Copernicus, arrived in New Orleans.
